The new owners of this 4,500-square-foot historic Tudor were captivated by its timeless charm, but the home needed thoughtful updates to support the rhythm of modern family life—including three children and a dog. Our renovation stayed true to the home’s historic character while introducing comfort, functionality, and elevated design throughout.
On the first floor, we replaced the slate in the entryway with custom reclaimed oak Cassettonato flooring from Italy, creating a warmer, more inviting welcome. The dining area was reconfigured to carve out space for a new butler’s pantry, concealed behind beautifully detailed custom doors. The powder room was transformed with dramatic dark walls, a sculptural white marble sink, and brass accents—including a vintage sconce sourced from Architectural Antiques and a coordinating pendant light imported from London.
Upstairs, the second-floor layout was reimagined to create a private and spacious primary suite. A gracefully arched hallway leads to the primary bedroom, an oversized dressing room, and a Carrara marble-clad ensuite bath. Hidden closet doors subtly lead to a new second-floor family room, with one concealing a discreet washer/dryer unit. The two girls’ bedrooms share a bathroom with a separate toilet room, Kohler French Gold fixtures, and Hudson Valley Lighting brass sconces. On the third floor, the boy’s bedroom, guest accommodations, and two home offices are arranged around a bathroom featuring a chevron-patterned Artistic Tile black marble floor, classic Kohler pedestal sink, and elegant lighting.
As a designated landmark in the Cedar Knolls neighborhood, the home required historically appropriate materials and detailing. All new windows were custom fabricated to match the originals, and we replaced deteriorating half-timbering with hand-sewn mahogany beams before repainting the entire exterior to restore its dignified presence. Inside, the original hardwood floors were carefully refinished to preserve their warmth and character.
Modern amenities were seamlessly integrated into the home’s traditional layout. These include a full laundry room in the basement, two family hangout spaces, a home gym, and a completely upgraded electrical system. A new high-efficiency heating and cooling system brings year-round comfort to this beautifully restored Tudor.
